William Branham's Unholy Halo Photograph - The Real History
Leaders of the New Apostolic Reformation refer to William Branham’s “halo” photograph as evidence that God moved through Branham. Branham claimed that his alleged halo was the biblical “Pillar of Fire” that led Israel out of Egypt. For Branham’s cult members, the photograph is considered to be holy, and is used as a relic in both homes and churches. But if they knew the history behind the photograph, “holy” is not the word that would be used.
Branham claimed that the photo was the only one in the roll that could develop, and argued that it was not simply capturing the lights in the Sam Houston Coliseum. Other photos did develop, however, and other photos of the lighting were captured by many, many others in the Coliseum. The photographers did not initially allow Branham to use the photo, claiming copyright. As a result, it held up production of one of Branham’s books.
While preparing for hunting in Arizona in March of 1963, the photographers somehow persuaded Branham to petition to stay a nephew’s death sentence. Leslie Douglas Ashley was a transvestite prostitute, who with his partner Caroline Lima, murdered their client, Fred Tomes during the act. Branham did help stay the execution, apparently convincing Ashley to pretend that he was “Elijah the prophet”, and Ashley was sentenced to a minimum-security prison. Branham was in Houston for this petition during the “Mystery cloud” event in Arizona that produced other Relics. Ashley, however, escaped and was placed on the FBI’s top ten most wanted list. Authorities found him, working as “bobo the clown” in a circus in Georgia. Agents were asked to look for a man, dressed as a woman, who talked like a female, carried a bible, and was armed and dangerous. Ashley eventually was released, transitioned to female, and worked with the gay community in Houston. As “Leslie Perez”, she entered politics and was a tireless supporter of President Bill Clinton.
